About Black River Gorges National Park
Black River Gorges National Park lies in the southwest of Mauritius and is managed by the National Parks and Conservation Service. The authority describes a large protected forest landscape with different habitats and about 60 kilometres of trails. Routes range from shorter walks to longer, more demanding hikes, including the Black River Peak, Machabee, Mare Longue and Parakeet trails. Information about trail lengths and difficulty is available from the park authority.
This is a destination for walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than a single viewpoint with a short stroll. Pick a route to match your fitness and experience, check the latest trail conditions, and bring water, suitable footwear and weather protection. The park’s upland weather can differ from the coast, so plan for changing conditions. Use official trailheads and follow local notices, especially if rain affects access. The government site lists popular routes and facilities, and should be checked before setting off for current closures or safety guidance.
