About the area

About Port Louis & Centre

Port Louis is the capital and main port, and the best place to see everyday Mauritian life: the Central Market, street food, mosques, temples and churches within a few blocks, and the Caudan Waterfront for shops and restaurants by the harbour. The Aapravasi Ghat, where indentured labourers arrived in the 19th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Blue Penny Museum holds the island's famous stamps. Behind the city, the central plateau is higher, cooler and wetter. Curepipe has the Trou aux Cerfs volcanic crater, Moka has the Le Pouce hiking trail, and towns like Quatre Bornes and Rose Hill are where many Mauritians live and shop.
