About Le Pouce

Le Pouce is a mountain in the Moka Range, known for its thumb-shaped summit. At 812 metres, it is Mauritius’s third-highest mountain. The peak can be seen from Port Louis, and routes reach it from Moka or Port Louis. The ascent becomes steep near the summit, but climbing gear is not required. From the top, views extend over Port Louis, Moka and Beau-Bassin Rose-Hill.

The mountain also contains Le Pouce Nature Reserve on its northwestern flank. The reserve protects habitat for the endemic Le Pouce mountain screwpine. The mountain’s name refers to the French word for thumb, a nod to the shape of its peak. A hike here combines an uphill walk with a broad look across the island’s central uplands and the capital.
