About the area
The east coast has some of the island's longest white-sand beaches, at Belle Mare, Palmar and Poste Lafayette, and many of its larger resorts. The south-east trade winds blow here for much of the year, which keeps it fresh but can make the sea choppier than in the north or west, especially in the winter months. The fishing village of Trou d'Eau Douce is where boats leave for Île aux Cerfs, an islet with sandbanks, beaches and a golf course, and for the waterfall at Grand River South East. Inland, the Bras d'Eau National Park has walking trails through forest.
