About the area
Rodrigues is part of the Republic of Mauritius but feels like another world: a small, hilly island about 600 km east, reached by a short flight from Mauritius. Its lagoon is far larger than the island itself, and boats run out to islets such as Île aux Cocos, a bird sanctuary with white sand. On land, the coastal path between Saint François and Trou d'Argent passes some of the island's best beaches, and the François Leguat reserve is home to hundreds of giant tortoises. Port Mathurin, the small capital, has a Saturday market. Rodrigues has few large hotels: most stays are guest houses and small lodges, and many visitors rent a car or take guided trips.
