About South

The south is the least developed coast of Mauritius and, for many visitors, the most dramatic. Near Souillac the reef gives way and ocean swells hit the cliffs at Gris Gris, while waterfalls such as Rochester Falls sit a short drive inland. In the south-east, Mahébourg is an old town on a wide bay, close to the international airport, with Blue Bay Marine Park and the Île aux Aigrettes nature reserve just offshore. Bel Ombre, on the south-west side, has a cluster of resorts, a golf course and nature reserves in the hills. The tea estate at Bois Chéri and the La Vanille nature park are both inland day trips.
