About Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao)

Grand Bassin, also called Ganga Talao, is a crater lake in a mountainous part of Savanne District. It is regarded as a sacred Hindu site, with temples devoted to Shiva and other deities along the shore. The lake is a place of worship and a natural landmark in Mauritius' interior, set apart from the island's coastal visitor areas. Its two names are commonly used, so visitors may see either Grand Bassin or Ganga Talao on maps and local directions.

The annual pilgrimage during Maha Shivaratri brings devotees to the lake for religious observances. Nearby temples form part of the sacred site. Visitors of any faith are welcome to approach the area with respect and follow local guidance around the temples and water. The highland setting makes this a distinct cultural stop when exploring southern Mauritius; plan time for the drive inland and the visit to the lakeside shrines.
