About Fort Adelaide
Fort Adelaide, commonly called the Citadel, stands on a hill above central Port Louis. The Ministry of Tourism recommends a visit to the fort overlooking the capital, and the National Heritage Fund includes Fort Adelaide among Mauritius’s listed heritage sites. Its elevated position makes it a useful viewpoint for understanding the layout of Port Louis, its harbour and surrounding hills. The site can be added to a day exploring the city’s central market and historic streets.
Access arrangements and any areas open to visitors may change, particularly when events or maintenance are underway. No current visiting schedule is published, so check before you go. Wear comfortable footwear if approaching on foot and allow for the uphill route from the city centre.
