About Port Louis Central Market
Port Louis Central Market, which locals call the Bazaar, is the main market of the capital and the place where much of the city does its food shopping. Stallholders call out prices over tables piled with tropical fruit and vegetables, and there is a separate section for spices. The building is on the National Heritage Fund's list of national heritage sites in Port Louis.
Street food kiosks in and around the market sell snacks such as samosas and dholl puri, along with sweet pastries and glasses of alouda, the island's cold milk drink. Stalls just outside sell clothes and bags, and the first floor has locally made crafts and souvenirs.
The market is run by the City Council of Port Louis and is open Monday to Saturday from early morning (5 a.m. in summer, 5.30 a.m. in winter) until 6 p.m., and on Sunday and public-holiday mornings until noon. It is a short walk from the Caudan Waterfront and sits next to Chinatown, so it fits easily into a walk around the city centre.
