About Aapravasi Ghat
Aapravasi Ghat is a World Heritage site on Quay Street in Port Louis, where the remains of an immigration depot built in 1849 are interpreted alongside a visitor centre. UNESCO describes the site as the starting point of the modern indentured-labour diaspora: between 1834 and 1920, almost half a million indentured workers arrived from India to Mauritius or passed through to other destinations. The site gives visitors a place to learn about that history and its lasting significance.
The Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund’s visitor page says a visit, including the Beekrumsing Ramlallah Interpretation Centre, takes about an hour. Its published visitor information describes guided visits and contact details; the older official factsheet lists weekday and Saturday access hours, but current times should be checked directly before arrival. This is a focused heritage visit in central Port Louis, convenient to combine with nearby museums and the waterfront. Treat the site respectfully as a place of memory, and allow time to read the interpretation rather than only viewing the ruins.
