About Mauritius Postal Museum
The Mauritius Postal Museum occupies the historic General Post Office building beside the waterfront in Port Louis. Mauritius Post describes the building as a mid-Victorian structure erected between 1865 and 1870 and converted into a museum. The exhibits follow the development of postal services on the island through the Dutch, French and British periods, including the arrival of postage stamps and the role of railways in moving mail.
Mauritius Post offers guided visits on request and lists weekday and Saturday opening hours, with closure on Sundays and public holidays. The museum is a compact cultural stop for visitors interested in communications, stamps or the history of Port Louis, and its waterfront location makes it easy to combine with nearby heritage attractions. Do not confuse the Postal Museum’s displays with the separate Blue Penny Museum: the two institutions are nearby and have different collections.
