About Le Morne Brabant
Le Morne Brabant rises on the southwest peninsula of Mauritius and forms the central feature of the Le Morne Cultural Landscape. UNESCO describes the mountain as a refuge for runaway enslaved people, or maroons, during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its caves, cliffs and oral histories make the site a place of remembrance as well as a striking part of the island’s landscape. The mountain and its story are central to Mauritius’s heritage.
The Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund publishes visitor information for hiking the mountain, including opening times and a latest permitted start for the ascent. The trail can be physically demanding, and access may be restricted for safety or conservation reasons. Check the Trust Fund’s current notices before going, start within the stated time window and follow all instructions on site. Visitors who do not plan a hike can still learn about the landscape’s heritage through official interpretation. Treat the place respectfully and remain on approved routes.
