About Maheswarnath Mandir
Maheswarnath Mandir, also known locally as Grand Shivala Triolet, is a Hindu temple in Triolet, in the Pamplemousses District. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is associated with the first pilgrimage to Ganga Talao, the sacred lake in central Mauritius. The temple’s architectural style is Bengali, reflecting a building tradition with roots in eastern India. The site is also associated with Durga and Krishna/Jagannath. It is counted among the island’s largest and oldest Hindu temples. Its festival calendar includes Maha Shivratree, Durga Puja and Krishna Janmashtami.
The temple was founded in 1888 by Pandit Shri Sajeebunlall Ramsoondur, who came from Calcutta. It remains a place of worship as well as a landmark in the religious history of Mauritius. Visitors should approach respectfully and follow any guidance at the temple, particularly during prayer and festival observances.
